The Scraping

Whenever the wind really gets to blowin’ — which isn’t, like, totally unheard-of on this exposed little island — something in our newly landscaped yard makes a loud banging and scraping noise as if the fence were once again falling over. I dash to the window every time and frantically look the place over, but … Continue reading »

Yard photos

I am still startled by how much I love our newly landscaped backyard. I spend so much time out there: if it’s not absolutely freezing, I’m out there pretty much whenever the sun is shining, even if I’m wrapped up in four layers. Here’s the yard about a year before the remodel. This isn’t an … Continue reading »

One reason to have a kid

I was thinking yesterday about family dinners. I grew up sitting down to dinner every night with my parents: no TV, no books, just conversation. This sometimes led to screaming matches and slammed doors (me), but more often led to shared jokes and silly voices and making fun of the dog (also me). We always … Continue reading »

Europe Fail

Since I cannot go to Paris at present, yesterday I decided to go to San Francisco and pretend I was somewhere else. (Excuse my photo effects, please. I’m experimenting with an Android app called Vignette and possibly going a little overboard with it. But it’s so fun!) I got up early (for me) and took … Continue reading »

We can’t even think of a word that rhymes.

I set off to do some Christmas shopping yesterday with a heavy heart, dreading the Christmas carols that every store would be playing. I love the carols, but they do tend to stick in your brain teeth; putting those songs in your head is like giving peanut butter to a dog. (Side note: have you … Continue reading »

Happy Halloween! (Or, getting the spirit.)

I’ve been so Grinchy about Halloween this year. I’m not sure why. I was so excited last year, and then we had even more cute little trick-or-treaters than I was expecting and friends came to our house to hang out and a good time was had all around. So why the grumbling? Why the desperate … Continue reading »

Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

What a lovely summer we’re having, eh? Last night I went to dinner in San Francisco wearing nothing but a tank top, jeans, a sweater, sheepskin boots, a down parka and a fur-lined hood. Hot town, summer in the city! This is the perfect weather to get my outdoor work done without melting, of course. … Continue reading »

Captain Fantastic

I’ve been feeling a little lonely for the city lately. I miss being surrounded by limitless cool stuff — the weird little film festivals, the obscure cuisines, the biggest rubber band ball. But yesterday Gene’s company rented out the Lucky Ju Ju pinball museum and catered it with a gourmet taco truck and, being a … Continue reading »

High Dudgeon

I’m a bit under the weather today, but I’ve just spent a very pleasant hour lying in the backyard without anything particular happening in my brain. Very nice to be able to just lie there in some sunshine when sick. For a while I got to watch our front-porch bird, whatever he is — some … Continue reading »

Books!

The Alameda Library Sale is this weekend! At first I thought the website said they would be selling between 800-1000 books, which is…pretty much like if you came over to my house to shop. But then I realized they will be selling 800-1000 BOXES of books. I am all over this. All over it.
