Carthage is three. I am a brunette.

Now and then some friend of a friend mentions that he reads my site on a regular basis. For these people I'm just a fictional character; running into me at a party must be like seeing Elizabeth Bennet hanging out and drinking a beer--or really, let's face it, Moll Flanders. The me they see here is a superior me: more streamlined, more articulate, wittier. I'm better on paper than in person. ("You are, actually," the Lad says thoughtfully.)

I managed to insult my professor today, which I offer as proof of my better-on-paper theory. "Brown is considered to be the least interesting hair color," I said, analyzing a description in The Awakening, then glanced up at her very brown hair and tardily added "...by some people."

I also have brown hair and I wouldn't deny that it's an uninteresting hair color. Blondes are supposed to be more fun and glamorous, red hair is always more interesting and black hair more exotic. I've always wanted black hair because both my mom and big sister have black hair and it's much shinier and thicker than my thin, chestnut hair, which is more like my dad's. Anyway, I can forgive Chopin for dissing brown and I'm sure that your professor knows you're right. Lastly, I don't know if Elizabeth Bennet would be drinking a beer... she always seemed more like a champagne-out-of-the-bottle kind of girl to me.

I have - of recent years - been the subject of debate as to my actual hair color.
Some say it's blonde, some say brown.
I still think of myself as blonde-
as I grew up undeniably blonde.

But still, my hair is darker now.
I hardly have *more* fun,
and if I'm blonde, then I lose my status as a
"Big Messy Brown-Haired Girl,"
which I take solace in.

hmmm.
