$99 Picture Frames
Today my six-month Pottery Barn checkup came due so I wandered down there for a few minutes. Every half-year or so I need to enter a Pottery Barn (or a Williams Sonoma, or a Crate & Barrel, or almost any store on Union Square) to sneer at the ridiculous merchandise, thereby reminding myself that I don't really want to live in the rooms displayed in the catalogs, where no one leaves teacups out on the table or owns garbage cans.
"Can I help you?" said the Pottery Barn employee.
"Yes," I said. "I'm looking for something which is both functionless and exorbitantly expensive."
"Allow me to recommend the teak cleaning spray," he said immediately, and my scorn for it wafted me straight out of the store and into my right mind.

It is silly that those stores sell $3,000 couches, $800 coffee tables and $150 christmas tree skirts. Not only do they make me realize how poor I am, but they make me almost proud that almost everything in my house is from Ikea; a place that has cheap furniture that I can really use and not worry about its resale value since it's pretty much worthless as soon as you assemble it. However, I sometimes buy housewarming gifts from such places... do you have anything functionless but not exorbitantly expensive you'd like for your house, such as these fun things?

those are lovely. our problem though is that we have too much stuff right now. but if you are truly feeling the housewarming vibe, an ideal housewarming gift is a bottle of alcohol for our next party, whenever that is. i'd like to get a decent bar together.

or the teak cleaning spray, obviously.
