Four More Years, Alas

I just started looking online for coverage of yesterday's big NY protest during Bush's speech and I'm not finding a whole lot, even on commondreams.org. Can anyone give me a link to an in-depth story with maybe some critical thought behind it? Or if those of our crew who are actually there make your way to this site any time soon, I'd love to hear your stories.

well that story was pretty lame.

Yeah, you're right. You should tell more stories about toddler pee.

My boss took the office dog to be put to sleep today. I wanted to take him home with me, at least until I could find him a better home, but I couldn't get ahold of Christine yesterday.

The dog bit one person. He might have even been playing. He could have easily been trained not to do that.

oh no! i am so sorry. that's horrible. couldn't he have taken the dog to arf or someplace where they are experienced in rehabilitating that kind of behavior? it's horrible to lose a dog.

Yes, she could have.

Which is what makes it worse.

I know you can relate. Roxie was a wonderful dog, and I miss her, too, even as little as I knew her.

i think the big protest was on sunday not yesterday. i mean it's been big protests all along, but the main big one was sunday. there was a line of protesters 3 miles long at one point. i think for just one category of protestors. also lots of people were arrested and 500 people are still in jail which would used to be illegal but which is now ok under the patriot act.

i learned all this info secondhand in class last night. so...don't believe everything i say. and search for info on sunday protests not wednesday.

could be. but yesterday was the bush speech, which my prof assured us would be a day to be remembered, yet so far no one seems to remember it.

There was a big protest sunday but there was a big one yesterday too because of Bush's arrival and the general disgust by all New Yorker's of his pressence in our city. but i didn't go to either so i don't know what to tell you.

I did have a few friends who went to both protests so i will ask them and let you know :)

I searched for "RNC protest" on CNN.com and this is what I got... although I don't really trust CNN's reporting any farther than I can throw Lou Dobbs. However, this is really good for CNN (see Moe's score). If you haven't been able to find out anything about the protests, there are probably two (major) reasons.

1. You're in the RNC security zone. CNN quoted one delegate as saying "The environment really hasn't affected me because security has been so good," said Catherine Davis, a Georgia guest delegate running for Congress against former Rep. Cynthia McKinney. "I didn't notice the protesters, I didn't notice what was going on, until I get back to the hotel and see the news." It's good to know that NYC is doing such a good job of keeping the protesters away from the convention so that the people there aren't even aware of the protests in any real way. It's nice that the Republican's are still ignorning the opposition (and their intense anger and sense of utter betrayal) so they can continue to whore out 9/11 for their own political gain in peace.

2. The protests aren't "newsworthy" enough for the media. In one way, this is bad because not only are the Republicans ignoring the protesters in order to continue on their merry conservative/war agenda way, but the media is going to allow the Republicans to do so while only reporting on the official Democratic response to the RNC rather than those ratty, hippie, grassroots organziations out there. Those aren't legitimate voices readers/views want to hear in this debate, right? Besides, there's the practical point that in order to cover the protests, a reporter would actually have to get his/her ass down there... which would naturally interrupt too much valuable AP wire-monitoring time. From another (and my view) though, the lack of news about the protests is good. This means that the protests haven't gotten violent or chaotic enough for the news to feel that they must report on it or that people must know about it. I'm sure people know there are protesters out there and they're getting arrested in large numbers, but the lack of detail shows you that these are largely peaceful, organized protests, which I am fully in support of. It's sad they're not getting their fair share of coverage, but mediocre coverage is better than bad, cause-invalidating coverage any day.

My friend who's in NYC told me that it hasn't affected her a bit and she's been purposefully ignoring the massive amounts of RNC and protest coverage going on in NYC right now, but she did suggest I check out the New York Daily News.

There are multiple articles on the NY Times website, covering the protests during Bush's acceptance speech as well as the protests from the past week.

For example, these articles:

slate.com has been really great for coverage of the convention. Two of my favorites thus far: "Count the lies in Zell Miller's Speech" and "Four More Years...to do what he didn't do the first time"

Posted by: marina at September 3, 2004 11:12 AM

i would not mind seeing more results for demonstrations.

so how come you elected not to go?

Posted by: didofoot at September 3, 2004 11:12 AM

More results- like how we stopped the invasion of Iraq through our peace marches? Yeah, that really worked. Bush&Co. certainly took the opinions of those millions of people around the world into account.

Why didn't I go? Disillusionment. That, and laziness.

Posted by: Kim at September 3, 2004 11:22 AM

yes, i am with you. talking with our mouths is not really effective. we need to talk with our money. do you think the high high sf rents are actually due to a republican conspiracy to keep this liberal area free of pocket change which we could otherwise use to effectively support our causes? yes, i think so too.

Sorry to go off topic here again, but Mac is going to be put to sleep today at 4:30pm unless I find another solution before then.
