Wisdom from my Bio Professor:

On mitochondria:

"The mitochondria produce ATP, which, unlike food energy, can then be used everywhere else in the cells. It's much like using a credit card rather than an out-of-state check. ATP: It's everywhere you want to be."

On chromosomes:

"And what has always baffled me is that lesbian pornography is labeled as 'Triple X' when in fact it should be 'Quadruple X,' as it consists of two sets of X chromosomes."

On plant life:

"So you can see by this diagram that while humans need plants, plants do not need humans. I know a lot of you are living away from your parents' homes for the first time, but I don't care how independent you think you are: there's not a damn one of you who can beat out a banana tree for self-sufficiency."

oh, those crazy bio guys. the life of every party.

seriously, though? the dyke porn remark was f*cking hysterical.

but doesn't that mean that straight porn should be XXXY? and what about 3-ways? XXXXXY? and forget about accurately labelling gang-bang movies. XYXYXYXYXYXYXYXYXYXYXYXYXX? fuhgeddaboutit.

So, Allen, you're into XYXY, huh? Tell me, are you dominant or recessive?

ah jason, that took me a sec, but it was worth it.

The odd thing is that she used a banana tree as her example of self sufficiency, which is totally bogus. The modern banana tree is 100% dependent on humans because it is a seedless asexual plant. You can see more about how bananas depend on humans here

http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/instruct/chlee/plsc211/labmanual/lab3.PDF

and you can learn more about why, the banana being asexual and thereby having virtually no genetic variation, is probably going to dissapear in the next 10 years since it can't adapt.

but.....i like bananas. much like a monkey.

Posted by: michele at February 14, 2003 09:13 AM

Yeah, thanks Gene. Ruin the whole experience of taming a wild, independent banana and popping it into your mouth, why don't you.

Posted by: jason at February 14, 2003 09:30 AM

hwee! image: banana with little stubby legs and a maniac grin running away from me while screaming, "i'm my own banana!"

Posted by: michele at February 14, 2003 09:43 AM

So sad about bananas. Will we have new, genetically modified bananas in 10 years? Is it just that bananas as we now know them will be gone, or bananas in general. Because no bananas.. I just don't know if I can handle that. They are practically the perfect fruit!
